The Whisper that Replaced God, by Timothy Wolff

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I received a copy of “The Whisper that Replaced God” as part of the Speculative Fiction Indie Novella Competition (SFINCS).
I absolutely loved the uniqueness of this tale. This story is told in a first person POV and the Edgar Alla Poe-esque feeling of the narrative dragged me in instantly.
Lord Mute is a complex character, cursed with an unusual power which makes him feared in his home, even by his own family members, while at the same time turning him into a lethal weapon.
His view of the world is twisted, quixotic even, but eventually we come to realise that this too is an armour and once the fantasy and magical systems are removed, we are left with very human questions and conflicts.
I would like to have seen more of Lord Mute’s world and I feel that other characters, like Dorothy and his brother, could have had more development, but I was hooked to the story from page one.
For fans of dark tales, this is a must read!
